Micheal Lemus charged for assault on San Ignacio/Santa Elena Mayor

Posted: Friday, February 2, 2018. 7:52 pm CST.

BBN Staff:Last night, 18 year old Micheal Lemus was detained by San Ignacio Police and was later charged with two (2) counts of using threatening words and (1) count of aggravated assault on Mayor of the twin towns, Earl Trapp.

The incident occurred about 6:15 p.m. on Alta Vista Street in San Ignacio Town. According to the police, Mayor Trapp reported that whilst campaigning along with some aspiring councilors, a taxi stopped a few feet away and the passenger, Michael Lemus, started using insulting and threatening words towards him. Trapp told police that a traffic warden who was nearby intervened and as a result the passenger of the taxi pulled out a machete. Trapp’s account of events detail that the man then threatened the traffic officer and a struggle ensued. Police arrived a bit later and arrested Lemus.

The official police report coincides with the UDP team and Mayor Earl Trapp version of what occurred. However, the Lemus’ family refutes this report and claims that Michael Lemus was attacked by a campaign team from the United Democratic Party. Lemus body displayed several injuries to his body so it is evident that, whether he started the incident or not, he was at the losing end of the battle.

It is worthy to note that Michael Lemus is the nephew of Floyd Lemus, who is a member of the PUP slate contesting the municipal elections in San Ignacio/Santa Elena.  This incident no doubt has its foundation in local UDP-PUP tensions related to the upcoming elections.
