Health Ministry confirms Virulent flu not in Belize

Posted: Saturday, February 3, 2018. 9:31 a.m. CST.

By BBN Staff: Yesterday, Chief Executive Officer in the Ministry of Health, Dr. Ramon Figueroa told 7News  that the cases of flu being reported in the United States is not in Belize.

The flu has killed over 50 children and it is the H3N2 strain of the flu.

Figueroa told 7News that in late 2017, the Ministry of Health and staff of KHMH met since it was being reported that the virulent flu cases were being encountered at the KHMH.

“We had, had a report of an H3N2 strain sometime in February last year and we had a case that was exposed to the US, came to Belize ended up at KHMH and died. Again as things have it, I think we didn’t follow proper procedure in terms of sampling. We are still investigating the case, I think part of CDC’s role right now will be to follow up on that case,” Figueroa stated.

He also informed that samples have been sent abroad for testing and have since proven to be the normal adenovirus type of flu, which is not the virulent type.
