Town Councils owe big debt to SSB

BBN Staff: According to a report from Channel 5 News, at least three town councils are in debt to the Social Security Board to the tune of tens of thousands of dollars for unpaid contributions on behalf of staff members.

According to the information provided to the Board of Directors of SSB, the San Ignacio Town Council $49,972.10 in contributions for the period October 2014 to January 2017.  The Benque Viejo Town Council with reportedly owes $45,286.80 on behalf of employees for October 2014 to January 2017.  The Punta Gorda Town Council owes $38,152.80 from March to December 2017.

According to 5 News, Punta Gorda Mayor Fern Gutierrez confirmed that his council is working on a payment plan using subventions to pay off the debt. Gutierrez also told News 5 that council employees are still covered with SSB benefits.  San Ignacio Mayor, Earl Trapp also told Channel 5 that the council’s subvention has been used to clear the debt.
