By BBN Staff: Oceana Belize held a cleanup campaign this weekend, removing over 50 30-gallon bags full of garbage from out of the water along Sea Shore Drive.
A team of over 60 volunteers along with personnel from the Belize City Council came out on Saturday, February 10, after a group of concerned citizens reached out to Oceana about the severe the garbage problem in the area. After hours of working to bag up plastics bottles, construction material, debris and other garbage, the volunteers decided to focus on the just the plastics because of the huge amount of trash that had accumulated.
Belize District Field Representative for Oceana, Celeshia Guy, said that the organization is appealing to the public to properly dispose of garbage as trash often finds its way into rivers and eventually the sea, making situations like the one on Sea Shore Drive possible.
Guy said that proper garbage disposal is imperative for Belize given the number of people who rely on marine resources and the health risks that garbage can cause. Guy added that Oceana intends to do a follow-up cleanup activity in the area, also to be held in collaboration with the city council.
