By BBN Staff: Independent candidate for the Belize Progressive Party (BPP) from Punta Gorda town, Maria Lara, has alleged that members of the United Democratic Party (UDP) tried to convince her not to run in the upcoming municipal elections in exchange for monetary assistance.
According to Lara, she has previously asked UDP activists for assistance in paying her Galen University school fees. Lara says she met with Andre Price, who said he would see if he could find help for her. She claims that the following day she met with UDP Senator, Juliet Thimbriel, who asked her to make a public declaration that she would step down from the BPP and in exchange, they would pay 100% of her fees.
Lara claims she told them she would think about it but later changed her mind. Thimbriel, in an interview with Channel 7 News, rejected the claim and said Lara was the one who approached Price and asked for the meeting. Thimbriel also claims that Lara had asked Wil Maheia for assistance but when he didn’t help, that is when she approached Price. Interestingly, Thimbriel acknowledged to Channel 7 News that she told Lara, “she can only help those who support her councilor candidates.”
