BBN Person of the Week – Walter Castillo

Posted: Thursday, February 22, 2018. 10:49 a.m. CST.

By BBN Staff: Walter Castillo, an artist living in San Pedro, has been painting for well over 31 years and some of works have come to be well-known in Belize but also abroad.

He was raised in San Pedro and spent parts of his childhood in Caye Caulker and moving around rural Belize. Castillo says in those days, when technology was limited, he was fascinated by his surrounding environments and gravitated towards art and specifically painting.

Castillo says as a child he would often get in trouble with his teachers and parents for drawing doodles in his notebooks rather than focusing on his schoolwork but his passion for the arts persisted. By age 16, Castillo’s first international exhibit was featured in London, England. He says visiting Europe and viewing the works of art by the grand-masters at such a young age inspired him to pursue his passion even further, launching a lifelong career as an artist.

Castillo’s paintings often depict stunning landscapes and scenery found all over Belize, including sprawling mountains and colorful reefs. Castillo will have a booth at this weekend’s Street Art Festival in Belize city, where some of his works of art will be available for sale. Castillo also takes private commissions from clients who request specific paintings. He says depending on the type of painting requested his price may range from as little as $200 all the way to $4,600 for some of his fine works of art.

Anyone interested in potentially reaching Castillo for a painting can contact him via his Facebook page under his name Walter Castillo or can reach him via his cell phone number: 622-4936.
