By BBN Staff: The Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) will decide whether or not to charge seven Belize Defence Force soldiers and a police officer with murder after they brutally beat a man who later died from his injuries in Orange Walk.
Head of the Police Professional Standards Branch, Assistant Commissioner of Police, Chester Williams, said that police have detained the soldiers pending investigation and will turn over the case file for the DPP to make the determination, following the death of Ariel Salazar.
Williams said that on Thursday night a woman complained to the BDF officers that someone took away her cellphone, which prompted them to raid Salazar’s home at the corner of San Antonio Road and Staines Alley in the Orange Walk District.
They beat Salazar in the presence of his relatives and ended up leaving the residence without any phone to show for it. Williams told the media that the soldiers, assigned to the Belize Special Assignment Group (BSAG) had no authority to conduct the raid, and should have reported the alleged theft to the Orange Walk police.
He added that the evidence did not show any special connection between the woman and the soldiers. Salazar’s family is calling for justice to be served.
