Does leaked Fin Sec correspondence signal gasoline shortage?

Posted: Saturday, February 24, 2018. 11:56 am CST.

BBN Staff: An allegedly leaked correspondence from the Financial Secretary (FinSec), Joseph Waight is raising concerns that Belize may be facing a nationwide shortage of gasoline.

The alleged correspondence, which has generated lots of traction on social media, purports that the FinSec is telling senior public officers to stop checking their accounts, because the Government of Belize doesn’t have any money.

The leaked document comes at a time where the local media are reporting an imminent shortage of gas, because GOB, cannot make the payment for the resupply.

The Reporter Newspaper reported this morning that the container with the fuel is already in Belizean waters, but cannot dock to unload due to the nonpayment.

A shortage in gasoline could carry heavy economic consequences for Belize, as every business in country could be affected by the shortage.
