Posted: Saturday, February 24, 2018. 9:12 pm CST.

BBN Staff: Today, police arrested and charged Lennart Cajun, 29, police constable assigned to the Special Patrol Unit; Mateo Bolon, 28; Patrick Villagran,31; Patrick Diego, 26; Elvis Cob, 33; Edmar Petillo, 26; Bladimir Escarraga, 21; and Francis Sho, 23, all members of the Belize Defense Force, assigned to the Belize Special Assignment Group (BSAG), for the crime of murder and attempted murder.

Reports indicate that on Thursday night, the law men assigned to the BSAG team brutally beat Ariel Salazar who later died from the injuries.

Salazar was allegedly accused of stealing a woman’s phone, who then reportedly called on the BSAG team for help. Salazar was reportedly beat by the BSAG team in front of his family, who claim that they left without even finding a phone on Salazar.

On Friday, Head of the Professional Standards Branch, ACP, Chester Williams told the media that the soldiers assigned BSAG had no authority to conduct the raid, and should have reported the alleged theft to Orange Walk police.

He added that the evidence did not show any special connection between the woman and the soldiers.
