PUP speaks out in the wake of baby Alyssa’s death

Posted: Tuesday, March 6, 2018. 12:17 pm CST.

BBN Staff: The People’s United Party (PUP) expressed it outrage today at the tragic death of 17-month-old Alyssa Nunez.

In a statement issued this morning, the PUP’s United Women’s Group ( UWG) called on neighbours, relatives, and friends with any information on the circumstances that led to the child’s death to cooperate with authorities.

“We call on our Police Department and our judiciary to do a thorough investigation and prosecution of this case so that we do not have another matter thrown out due to technicalities,” the PUP said.

The party went on to call for the country’s leaders to make necessary legislative changes to strengthen the resolve in the pursuit of justice. The UWG noted that the situation demands national condemnation and serves as a call for Belize to look inward on the root causes of gender-based violence, to inspire a shift in those mentalities and cultural norms.

There has been continued public outrage over Alyssa’s death, as allegations were that the child was raped and sodomized; however, authorities have been guarded with releasing information on the case. Relatives told the media yesterday that the doctors that dealt with the child as she fought for her life at the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital, told the father that she was indeed raped; however, the official report made by police is that she died of trauma to the head.

The Director of Public Prosecutions has appealed to the public and the authorities to ensure that comments are carefully scrutinized to ensure that nothing is said that could adversely affect the trial when it goes to court.
