Opposition leader says violence must end

Posted: Wednesday, March 7, 2018. 12:05 pm CST.

By BBN Staff: Opposition leader John Briceno, in an interview with the media yesterday, said the violence plaguing Belize is at an all-time high and said the public should be outraged at the atrocious acts of violence committed against children over the last week.

“The violence and despicable attack even against our innocent children is symptomatic of moral decay occurring all across our nation,” Briceno said. “I think we as a people must take stock as to where we are as parents, as family members, neighbors, community leaders, churches, everyone,” he added.

“We need to show not only empathy and sympathy and concern for the family but we also have to show some sort of outrage. How can this be happening in our country? In such a small society where everyone knows one another?” Briceno questioned.

Addressing critics who may view the timing of his comments as political opportunism, Briceno said: “It is more important for us to speak out about issues that are really affecting our society and to risk being called out for political opportunism. This is a serious matter and if we can’t come together as leaders and as a society then we’re damned.”
