United Women’s Group calls for urgent action to protect children

Posted: Wednesday, March 14, 2018. 10:20 am CST.

By BBN Staff: Yesterday, the United Women’s Group (UWG), the women’s arm of the Opposition, People’s United Party (PUP) issued a release calling for urgent action to protect children.

The month of March is designated as Child Stimulation Month as well as Women’s Month.

The month has so far been a horrific tale of youth killings, sexual abuse of minors and violence against women and our children, the UWG said.

The (UWG) is outraged and angered at the news report of more findings of sexual abuse against another minor.  This comes after several youth murders and the tragic slaying of a mother in front of her daughter in their home in the past few weeks.

President of the UWG, Tanya Santos, explains that “as responsible citizens of this country we all must demand urgent action of both the state and of ourselves to combat this awful scourge that is occurring in our society.  Our children are being murdered due to gang violence, our mothers are being violently killed due to gang warfare and reports of increasing cases of sexual abuse and explicit acts against our children is reprehensible, alarming and must be condemned by all of us.  When we see something or suspect something, we must say something”.

According to the UWG, the marches and vigils to bring awareness are encouraged however, they must be supported with action in an effort to end violence.

The group says that children should be safe in their homes and communities.

‘We as a nation are failing our children when we cannot provide this safe space to them’, the release states.

The UWG calls on all national, civil authorities and organizations to embark on a nationwide public awareness campaign and education to commence the long process of changing behaviors, strengthening legislation and improving our social service systems to better service and counsel victims of these atrocities and to be in a better position to identify and prevent these crimes.

The UWG believes that a multidisciplinary approach from the government authorities to address this chronic situation of crime and sexual abuse against our children is essential.

The UWG also referred to the National Children’s Agenda that was launched last year and questioned if it is being executed with all the necessary support required and if there are additional steps that now need to be taken.

The UWG says that it stands ready to do its part to advocate for change.
