By BBN Staff: Police have detained a man in connection with the suspected drug plane that was found shortly after 12 this morning in Blue Creek, northern Belize.
The man who is detained was caught by police exiting the area prior to police making the discovery of the aircraft.
According to reports, the man is an employee of a Mennonite businessman.
Near the Rio Hondo area, authorities found the crashed plane, a green pick up truck with the words JEFE written on it, a red vehicle, and a white pick up truck.
Authorities believe that the pilot and passengers may have fled into Mexico with their cargo.
Assistant Commissioner of Police, Joseph Myvette informed the media today that there was an attempt to destroy the plane by fuel drums that were found in the area.
However, Myvette said that they are not yet certain if the fuel drums found at the scene were fuel for the plane or fuel to destroy the aircraft.
The pilot and perhaps the passengers on the plane may have fled hurt since blood was observed on the pilot’s seat.
A search of the plane number on the Internet revealed that the aircraft is registered in Venezuela and the flight might have originated from there.
This is the third plane landing in Belize in a span of only two weeks.
Police investigation continues.
