The ‘King’ taking his talents to Port Loyola, “Mark King Refueled, The Return”

Posted: Thursday, March 15, 2018. 2:35 pm CST.

Mark King, the colorful former United Democratic Party (UDP) area representative for Lake Independence, has announced his intention to re-enter the political arena and contest the next general election as the UDP’s candidate for Port Loyola. According to King via his Facebook page, he is forming the UDP Port Loyola Mark King committee.

He says he wants to “bring back the great people of Port to the UDP,” following his party’s clear loss of support in that constituency in the recent municipal elections. The UDP also lost ground in other strongholds which ultimately cost them the municipal election in Belize city, the crowned jewel of the UDP government which has dominated the city for years.

Now, perhaps sensing an opportunity to capitalize off the tremors shaking up his party, the King is back from wherever he went after he was bounced by Lake-I when Cordell Hyde returned to politics in the 2015 general elections. Hyde won that election a single vote shy of 2,000.

But King has been active on Facebook recently promoting himself as a candidate. As a matter of fact, one of his recent promotional ads was in the form of a movie trailer for the upcoming “Mark King Refueled, The Return”. It is basically the story of Mark King, written and directed by Mark King. He also claims to be providing major funding for a safety program for children in Port Loyola and says “more info coming soon”.

King’s page and movie trailer are almost as entertaining as his previous public antics. He first rose to prominence in 2006 when he was elected as a councilor for Belize city even though at the time he could not vote for himself because he was registered in the Belize Rural Central constituency, outside of city limits.

Seven weeks later he threatened his resignation from the council amidst mounting tension between himself and former Belize City Mayor, Zenaida Moya.

“I must differ on issues whereby it comes to issues within the City Council. I know there is a little terminology that Mark King likes to give trouble. I am not a trouble maker,” King noted in an interview with the media.

After serving his first term in office, he did not seek re-election. In 2009 he was banned from running for office for 3 years.

In 2011 he was involved in a fight with police after throwing a tantrum inside a casino in Corozal. In 2012, he stepped back on the scene as a candidate in the Lake Independence area after his party had initially refused him.

To force their hand, he had gone on record to say: “Let me tell you why the United Democratic is afraid of me, it’s because I have video and audio recordings and proof of everything that I say and do in this party.” With that, he was approved to contest the election which he won and thereafter announced that hundreds would be fired.

He would later go on to wage a public war with the KREMANDALA media empire. And perhaps most famously, in 2015 King was unapologetic and unrelenting about his position that he and his government serve “UDP supporters first, Belizeans second, and PUP supporters last.”

So here we go again, just when you thought the King had left the building.
