By BBN Staff: A video gone viral of police officers physically abusing an avocado vendor has caused a public outcry.

In the footage, police officers are seen manhandling the male vendor and throwing him and his avocados inside a waiting police mobile.

He is accused of selling contraband avocados at the Michael Finnegan market in Belize City.

On social media, the officers have been dubbed the “Avocado Suppression Unit.”

Today Deputy Commissioner of Police Chester Williams posted to Facebook that the matter is being investigated.

“In the matter of the police officers and the avocados, the officers concerned are being investigated with a view to ascertain what action will be taken against them,” he said.

He added, “I want to assure the public that as a department we are disturbed by the images depicted in the video, such behavior is surely not what we expect from our officers, especially in this era where we are seeking your support in making our communities safer.”

This incident occurred about three days ago.
