Chaos erupts in Ghost Town

Posted: Sunday, March 25, 2018. 5:38 p.m. CST.

By BBN Staff: A live video posted to Facebook a short time ago showed a chaotic scene erupting in the Ghost Town area of Belize city.

The video begins with Gang Suppression Unit (GSU) entering a crowded yard in the area. A lot of shouting can be heard in the background and as an officer grabs a young man violently by the shirt, chaos erupts as others present in the yard rush to his defense.

As the crowd begins to protest the actions of the GSU, an officer appears to open fire. In the video it is alleged that the officer shot a young man but also shot a woman. In the video, a woman is scene lying on the ground in the yard with a crowd of people gathered around her frantically screaming and shouting.

At one point, the woman filming the events has her phone knocked from her hand by an officer. As officers exit the yard, one police man can be seen briefly in the video aiming his gun toward scrambling residents. A barrage of shots can be heard in the video as residents and police scramble on the street.

At this time it is unclear what actually transpired or what caused the situation to escalate so quickly, however, with the already heightened tension on the streets after a murderous past week, this will certainly be a cause for concern for new Southside Commander, Howell Gillett.
