Posted: Wednesday, April 4, 2018. 3:40 pm CST.

BBN Staff: On  Monday, April 2, 2018, three Honduran nationals were caught fishing illegally in Belizean waters.

Mario Ricardo Banega, Jesus Alvarez, and Jolbin Roberto Cabrera Flores were detained by rangers of the Southern Environmental Association (SEA) and members of the Belize Coast Guard.

The officers were patrolling at the Spawning Aggregations Zone at the Gladden Spit and Silk Cayes Marine Research.

The Honduran fishers along with their boat ‘Bendiciones’ were detained and the rangers found various fin fish species inside the boat.

The fishermen will be charged for fishing without a special license, commercial fishing without a valid fisherman’s license, and using a vessel for commercial fishing without a valid boat license.

According to a release from SEA, they are hoping that the men also face immigration charges for entering the country illegally.

SEA thanks the Belize Coast Guard and the Fisheries Department for their continued support and cooperation.
