The PUP issued a release today, quoting an extract from an interview that Elrington did with Channel 5’s Aaron Humes, where he said that Guatemala would have to go to referendum to adopt any decision made by the ICJ.
The party ha called out Elrington for contradicting himself, noting that in previous interviews Elrington pointed out that Article 5 of the Special Agreement between Belize and Guatemala states that both countries shall accept the court’s decision as final and binding.
“The PUP calls on Minister Elrington to withdraw his clearly erroneous statement as it leads to confusion; such misinformation should not be left on the public record,” the party said.
The PUP also noted that a group of Belizeans were denied access to the Sarstoon over the weekend by Guatemalan Armed Forces, while Guatemalan fishermen continue to illegally fish in Belizean waters unimpeded.
“…we demand that the position in the Sarstoon and the southern waters of Belize be regularized by the re-establishment and enforcement of Belizean sovereignty and territorial integrity,” the PUP added.
The party has, on several occasions, called for Elrington’s resignation or removal as Minister of Foreign Affairs, because of the way he handles the Belize/Guatemala territorial dispute.
