By BBN Staff: The Caye Caulker Municipal airstrip which had been under construction since last year, is now closed for completion of repairs.

Tropic Air and Maya Island air announced last year that flights to Caye Caulker were suspended due to the inadequate infrastructure at the airport.

Since then, the Belize Airport Authority (BAA) has been rehabilitating the airport.

In a release issued last year, the BAA indicated that the airport would be fully operational after rehabilitation works completed in June 2018.

Last week, the BAA announced that the repairs are in progress and right on schedule.

The repairs include the rehabilitation and widening of the runway.

A new runway lighting system will also be installed.

In the meantime, the Sir Barry Bowen Municipal Airport is functional. The Sir Barry airport will also undergo some repairs, however, operations will continue because flights will be relocated to the taxi space which is being structured to work as a temporary run way.

Contractor, Imer Hernandez is working on both airstrips.

The project is expected to be completed by June as indicated by the BAA.
