Police renames Southside to Eastern Division Region 1

BBN Staff: Today, Howell Gillett, Commander of Southside, Belize City informed the media that the Belize Police Department has approved the change of names of Eastern Division South and Eastern Division North to Eastern Division Region 1 and Eastern Division Region 2 respectively.

According to Gillett, the change came in an effort to change the perception of the community as well as to make a positive impact on residents and visitors.

Gillett compared Southside to when Orange Walk was referred to as “Rambo Town”, and then the town’s name was changed to Shuga City which appealed to visitors.

Gillett also informed that Eastern division region 1 is implementing a training program for 25 young people in the community to be trained as bartenders, and upon completion of the training, the business community, and the police will assist in job placement.

Young people must be 18 years and older and must be from Eastern Division region 1 to apply for the program.
