Belize holds Law-Making Forum 2018

BBN Staff:The Attorney General’s Ministry in conjunction with the Office of the Prime Minister held the Belize Law-Making Forum 2018 at the Best Western Belize Biltmore Plaza in Belize City yesterday and today under the theme, “Sound Policy for Better Law”.

The purpose of the Forum was to create a training platform for public officers who play a role in developing policies that are intended to underlie proposed legislation.

The Forum’s core learning objectives include:

  1. providing a greater understanding of the legislative process and the importance of thoroughly developed policy for good law;
  2. 2.   building capacity to distinguish between, and prepare white papers, legislative drafting instructions, cabinet memoranda for proposed legislation, and other relevant documents to facilitate the drafting of legislation;
  3. providing the ability to contribute to the generation of the relevant framework for a systematic annual legislative programme for Belize;
  4. building capacity to understand and apply guidelines for improving pre-legislation and legislative/parliamentary scrutiny of Bills.

The Forum saw a total of sixty- four (64) participants from over fifteen (15) line ministries.

The participants received a certificate of participation issued in collaboration with the University of Belize that officially acknowledges the participant’s completion of the training session.

The Forum was funded by the Improved Access to Justice in the Caribbean (Impact Justice) Project that has an overall purpose, “to enhance access to justice for the benefit of women, men, youth and business in CARICOM Member States”.
