Pitts and Usher wage war for Port

Posted: Monday, April 23, 2018. 7:44 pm CST.

BBN Staff: Within the next 60 days the Opposition People’s United Party (PUP) hopes to have an elected Standard Bearer in the UDP held Port Loyola constituency.

Sources in the PUP have expressed to BBN that there are two persons seeking control of the area.

Recently elected Belize City Councilor, Dr. Candice Pitts, known as “the johnny cake girl” has applied for the post.

However, long time Standard Bearer, Gilroy Usher, has also applied for another shot in the next general elections.

The two camps have since launched their ground campaigns, which have become somewhat heated in recent days.

On social media, Dr. Pitts has faced criticism for entering the race even though she was just sworn in to office less than a month ago.

Additionally, critics say that her entrance will only disrupt the progress that has been made in the constituency by her opponent, Usher, who has been credited with narrowing the gap in a UDP stronghold from thousands to less than a hundred in the last election cycle.

He has also been credited with delivering Pitts and her team in the last municipal election by more than 100 votes.

Yesterday media personality, Sharon Marin Lewis posted to Facebook, “…Belize City and every municipality deserve dedicated, competent, honest and committed people to serve via their respective offices to which they were duly elected.”

She added, “For the last municipal elections, I openly stated that I voted the BPP slate, Candice Pitts and Micah Goodin of the PUP and filled up the rest to make my ballot count. I do not understand, how Miss Pitts can now, after freshly being elected to serve in the Belize City Council as a councillor, immediately begin campaigning to run as area rep for the Port Constituency.”

“Do not use our vote as just a stepping stone on your march to higher office but rather as a tool to learn as well as apply the skills you wooed voters with, to fulfill your office’s mandate. If you were saying vote for me so I can have clouth as I immediately seek higher office, I missed it” she added.

To this post, Simone Williams, a registered voter in Port Loyola replied, “Well if not Pitts who? Caz we don’t want Usher!”

BBN notes that Usher was defeated twice at the polls in 2012 and 2015.

In a recorded video message, Pitts explained that she had to enter the race now as the party needs to prepare for the upcoming reregistration process.

She explained that it didn’t matter if she was at City Hall or in Cabinet, she simply wanted to serve humanity.

Furthermore, she argued that women are under-represented in the House of Representatives.

She pointed that her own party currently has no female representation there.

While the PUP makes preparation to gain ground in Port, the UDP’s area representative, Anthony “Boots” Martinez, has already announced his intention to resign from electoral politics.
