By BBN Staff: After spending 6 years in prison on remand, accused murderer Allan Somerville is free after the Director of Public Prosecution’s office withdrew charges against him.
With the charges against him withdraw, Justice Marilyn Williams granted his freedom in court yesterday.
Somerville’s charges date back to April 2012 when Elono Requena, 32, was shot and killed.
According to court documents, Requena was walking on to the Cornel English Bridge in Hattieville sometime around 8:00 p.m.
Requena was walk with a child on his back. Despite this, however, the assailant walked up to him and opened fire.
Requena was shot in the stomach while the child was shot in the foot.
Requena succumbed shortly after but the child was treated and released.
Less than a month later, Somerville was charged for ‘murder’, ‘attempted murder’, ‘grievous harm’ and ‘use of deadly means of harm’.
We note that although the charges against Sommerville have been withdrawn, he can be recharged at a later date if new evidence surfaces.
