By BBN Staff:As we had previously reported, the race is heating up for the position of PUP Standard Bearer in the Port Loyola constituency.

Incumbent Standard Bearer, Gilroy Usher, is being challenged by newcomer and recently elected Belize City Councilor, Dr. Candice Pitts.

Earlier this week Pitts released a video message announcing her candidacy.

Yesterday Usher issued a press release on his candidacy.

First, he noted that in the March election he and his committee, “campaigned tirelessly to secure the votes of the people of Port Loyola.”

This, he claims, led to the party’s first victory in the division in almost 15 years.

According to the release, the electorate voted for people to work at the council level and not for those persons to use the council as “a tool to seek higher office in what appears now to have been a bait-and-switch scheme.”

Usher makes the case that without any financing from government or his party, he has worked relentlessly for the people of Port Loyola.

He explained that when he sought to represent the people of Port Loyola he knew that, “it would be no easy task.”

According to Usher, his predecessor had been defeated by the UDP’s Anthony “Boots” Martinez by 1,395 votes in the 2008 elections.
In 2012, he was defeated by 799 votes.
In 2015, he revealed that through continued hard work he trimmed the gap to 76 votes.
Our hard work proved fruitful on March 7th, when through our relentless campaigning, Port was a constituency which delivered the PUP slate to City Hall,” said the statement.
