By BBN Staff: Our newsroom has confirmed that the Ministry of Education has docked the salaries of teachers who attended the Belize National Teachers’ Union (BNTU) rally on March 22.

We remind you that this rally was a response to the prevalence of violence against women and children in the country.

It is not yet known if school managers have made the deduction but we do know that the Ministry has made the request.

It is also not known how many teachers will be affected.

BBN has been informed that the BNTU is consulting with its membership to determine what course of action will be taken.

This is not the first time that the Ministry has threatened to dock the salaries of teachers. Following the 2016 protest for good governance, the Ministry had threatened to dock salaries. However, they abandoned that position and instead allowed teachers to make up time lost during the protest.
