By BBN Staff: Guatemalan President, Jimmy Morales has tweeted congratulations to the government of Belize for finally announcing a date to hold its national referendum.

The government of Belize yesterday announced that the referendum will be held on April 10, 2019.

Belizeans will be asked if they agree or not to take Guatemala’s long standing claim on Belize’s continental, insular and maritime territory to the International Court of Justice (ICJ).

Belize’s Foreign Affairs Ministry has begun an awareness campaign entitled: “ ICJ, Be Informed”.

Shortly after the release went out, Guatemalan media reported on it and Morales took to Twitter to congratulate Belize saying: “Together we can find a peaceful solution to the territorial, island and maritime dispute.”

Guatemala’s Foreign Minister, Sandra Jovel, also tweeted congratulations to Belize for setting a date.

On April 15, Guatemala held its ow national referendum in which they voted ‘Yes’ to take the claim to the ICJ.

If Belize votes ‘Yes’ to the ICJ, whatever ruling handed down by the court must be respected and cannot be appealed.
