By BBN Staff: Last week, BBN reported that a Belizean fisherman was detained by Guatemalan authorities for illegally fishing lobster and conch in Guatemalan waters.

According to reports from the family of the Belizean fisherman, they got a call from inmates in Puerto Barrios, Guatemala demanding $5,000 to ensure his safety in prison.

The money is apart from fines that the family must pay to Guatemalan authorities.

The family is concerned about his safety while in detention in that country.

In an interview with the media yesterday, Foreign Minister, Wilfred Elrington said that he had not heard of the Belizean fisherman detained in Guatemala.

I have never heard of it,” Elrington said.

Elrington further explained that in a case like that, Guatemalan authorities will get in touch with the Belize Embassy in Guatemala and embassy officials will determine how they can assist.
