By BBN Staff: Last month, BBN reported on the Belize Electricity Limited request for approval from the Public Utilities Commission (PUC) of an increase in mean electricity rate. https://breakingbelizenews.com/2018/04/04/belizeans-could-be-looking-at-higher-light-bills/
BEL had asked for a 7.1% average increase, however, the PUC has approved a 4.4% increase.
The original request from BEL was for the average rate of 36.9 cents for kilowatt hour to go to 39.5 cents from July 2018 to July 2019.
The approved rate is 38.62 cents per kilowatt hour up to June 2020.
BEL can challenge the approval.
The company is yet to issue an official statement.
