Teachers who protested against violence to get salary cut, BNTU to discuss response

Posted: Friday, May 4, 2018. 9:29 am CST.

BBN Staff:On Saturday the executive of the Belize National Teachers’ Union (BNTU) will determine actions to be taken in light of imminent pay cut.

Those actions include boycotting teachers day celebrations or withholding contributions to management for the remainder of the year.

The Ministry of Education has instructed school managers to dock the salaries of almost 700 teachers who in March protested against the surge in violence against women and children.

The salary deduction for one day is scheduled for the end of this month.

We remind you that this is not the first time that the Ministry has instructed school managers to dock the salaries of teachers.

Following the BNTU’s 11 day protest for good governance in 2016, their salaries were threatened.

However, instead, they were allowed to extend the school year by a few days to ensure that there would be no salary cuts.
