Cinco de Mayo is a huge cultural celebration in commemoration of the battle in Puebla de Los Angeles, Mexico.
The Mexican and French were in battle and on that fateful day, May 5, 1862, an outnumbered Mexican army defeated a powerful invading French force.
It was a major celebration since the French army had not been defeated in over 50 years and that exemplified Mexican patriotism.
The retreat of the French troops at the Battle of Puebla represented a great moral victory for the people of Mexico, symbolizing the country’s ability to defend its sovereignty against a powerful foreign nation.
Since then, the celebration became annual in Mexico and in the United States with rich Mexican cultural food and heritage.
