By BBN Staff:Game 1 of Premier League of Belize (PLB) finals kicked off on Sunday, May 6th between Verdes FC and the Belmopan Bandits inside the Norman Broaster Stadium.
Verdes went on to the finals despite the BDF launching an official protest following the unruly cancellation of a penalty that would have seen BDF rather than Verdes advancing to the finals. Football fans from all over gathered to watch the game between these two rivals from the West.
Both teams came out in full force with one aim – to win.
In the first half of the ball game Verdes’ Brazilian import, Alcides Thomas, scored giving his team a 1-nil lead.
The 1-nil lead fuelled the excitement of Verdes’ fans and held up until well into the second half.
The noise from Verdes’ fans came to an abrupt end when young Norman Anderson of the Belmopan Bandits chipped one pass Verdes’ goal keeper. Knowing this away goal means 2 aggregate points, the Bandits team held their defence until the referee blew the long whistle.
The game ended with a score of 1:1, but since this was an away game for the Bandits, they gained 2 aggregate points while Verdes gained only 1 point.
This gives the Belmopan Bandits the edge heading into the 2nd round of the PLB finals.
The next game is scheduled for 8:00 pm on Saturday, May 12th at the Isidoro Beaton Stadium in Belmopan.
