By BBN Staff: Friends for Conservation and Development (FCD) issued a report yesterday informing that while on a joint patrol this week in the southern part of Chiquibul National Park, they found several areas that demonstrate active human activities in the reserve.
Rangers observed fresh survey lines and plantations of beans, corn, and bananas planted by Guatemalan farmers inside the national park.
According to FCD, information to them is that now with a “Yes” to the ICJ, several rogue leaders in Guatemala have been arriving at local communities including those near Belize’s western border informing villagers that Guatemala has now recovered Belize and a list is being developed for those who can occupy the lands.
“It remains clear that persons found inside the Chiquibul National Park involved on these activities will be detained and handed over to the regulatory agencies for charges to be levied on them,” a statement from FCD says.
The illegal activities range from illegal entry, defacing a protected area, occupying and settling inside a protected area and destroying the forest.
