By BBN Staff: Belize Telemedia Ltd. (BTL), via a press release, announced that it has been ranked number 1 in Latin America and the Caribbean in Mobile Data Download Speeds by Ookla in December 2017 and February 2018.

According to the company, Digicell customers now enjoy faster mobile data speeds than that of the service offered in neighboring countries like Mexico, Guatemala and Panama.

BTL credited its recent technological network upgrades as the reason that Belize is now known to have one of the fastest mobile download speeds in the Caribbean and Latin America.

As Network Expansion continues with the implementation of mobile coverage in both rural and urban areas, additional installation of 20 additional cell sites will be executed, further increasing coverage throughout the country, the company said.

BTL also pointed to the recent introduction of its Diginet service, which launched in May 2017 as another indication of the revolutionizing of technology. According to BTL, the new fiber based technology has provided a 130% increase in the rate of download speeds, with an average now of 12.9Mbps.

Since implementing Diginet in Belize, the country’s global ranking for broadband download speeds has increased within the previous year by 23 positions and with continued work it is expected that Belize will be among other countries with the highest download speeds regionally before the year 2020.
