By BBN Staff: A man accused of a murder on one of Belize city’s busiest street is now a free man after spending six years on remand.

He is Wagner’s Lane resident, Dennis Robert Matura, 24.

In 2012, while he was only eighteen years old, he was charged with the murder of Michal Garbutt, 23.

Just before 3:00 p.m. on April 4, 2012, Garbutt was infront of Dee and Dee restaurant on Albert street waiting for relatives when he was shot in the head and left for dead.

Court documents reveal that the gunman walked up to him from Simmons alley and fled down that alley after the murder.

We note that Simmons alley connects Wagner’s Lane to Albert Street.

7News reported that eyewitnesses told the court that they saw the gunman for less than ten seconds and he wore a peak cap making it difficult to identify him.

In court yesterday, Crown Counsel Rene Montero, withdrew the charges against Matura after the witnesses could not identify him as the shooter.
