SSB says Belize City Council owed $77,000

Posted: Wednesday, May 16, 2018. 10:25 am CST.

BBN Staff: During his transition report, Belize City Mayor, Bernard Wagner revealed that the council had not been paying income tax or Social Security contributions since August 2017.

When asked by the media, former Mayor Darrel Bradley denied the claim.

Former City Administrator, Candice Miller, also denied the claim.

However, yesterday the Social Security Board (SSB) sent the Belize City Council a bill for $76,000.

According to the SSB, if this payment is not made within five days, it will take the matter to court.

Councilor Micah Goodin told BBN that the urgency by SSB is questionable.

“It begs the question why there was no urgent rush for the last council to make its payments,” he said.

He continued, “Why did they allow the former council to leave the new council with this unneeded debt.”

The Belize City Council has not yet taken a formal position on the request but all indications are that the payments will be made.
