National Security Minister visit Western border Security Facilities upgrade Project

The Belize Defence Force (BDF) Light Engineers are working on a project to repair, upgrade and consolidate security facilities at the Belize-Guatemala border at Benque Viejo del Carmen (Belize) and Melchor de Mencos (Guatemala).

The works include improvements to fences, gates and other border security features.

They are being coordinated in conjunction with the Belize Border Management Authority.

The project is expected to take no more than six to eight weeks to complete.

The works are not expected to disrupt the flow of traffic at the border.

Saldivar explained that “the improved security measures have become necessary due to the increasing volume of activity at the border, particularly trade, tourism and citizens crossing this area of our border with Guatemala.”

In relation to the safety of Belizeans crossing the border daily, Saldivar said that the ministry is also addressing this in the necessary upgrades.
