By BBN Staff:After 18 years, the University of Belize’s Faculty and Staff Association has become an officially registered entity under the Trade Unions and Employer’s Organizations (Registration, Recognition and Status) Act, Chapter 304 of the Laws of Belize.
The association, which has some 300 members, made it official on May 16. Current president, Isabel Bennett, explained that the move is critical to the enhancement of the faculty and staff, and the university as an institution.
“What this means for us is that we can now enter into collective bargaining agreements with the employer, which of course will produce better working conditions for the employees here,” Bennett said.
She added that there are several other benefits to the association becoming a registered body, including a direct benefit to the students of UB. The association will be holding its Annual General Meeting on Friday, May 25, to hold executive elections and propose several amendments to its constitution.
