By BBN Staff: The Venezuelan government, via its embassy in Belize, announced on Thursday that it would be investing in social projects here in the country with money which it cannot transfer back to Venezuela.
Charge D’Affairs of the Venezuelan embassy, Mykel Lenin Castillo Peña, told the media at a press conference yesterday that the government of Venezuela has over US $14 Million retained in Belize by way of PetroCaribe payments, however, restrictions imposed by the US government have made it impossible for Venezuela to transfer the funds through the banking system.
According to Peña, some of the money will be used for establishment of 2 eye care centers, with medical care free of cost to the people, and the implementation of solar panels in southern Belize that will allow an improvement in the quality of life in some villages.
Venezuela recently held national elections with President Nicolas Maduro being re-elected to office, however, the US and organizations such as the Organization of American States (OAS) and others have declared they do no recognize the validity of the election results.
