By BBN Staff: Santander Sugar Group, located in Valley of Peace, Cayo is a Guatemalan investment sugar mill company.

The Santander group was granted an export processing zone to produce sugar in Belize for exporting purposes.

However, reports are that the sugar from Santander is being sold at local markets and supermarkets across Belize.

In an interview with News 5, Alfredo Ortega, Chairman of the Belize Sugar Cane Farmers Association (BSCFA) informed that some businesses in Cayo plan to cancel their arrangement with BSI.

The BSCFA has requested a meeting with Belize’s Agriculture Minister, Godwin Hulse, to discuss the matter.

Santander Sugar, Santander Farms and SS Energy have invested BZ $360 Million dollars in Belize with the goal to double Belize’s sugar exports and provide renewable energy to the local electricity grid.

In February 2016, Santander commenced its first sugar cane harvest in Belize, produced its first sugar at its mill in Cayo and on July 29th, 2016 the company exported its first shipment of sugar to Europe.
