Attorney General Ministry issues release on JPs verification process

By BBN Staff:  The Attorney General’s Ministry today informed all Justices of the Peace and the public that the Ministry is the only regulatory body for JPs and thus the verification is to be done directly and only with the Attorney General’s Ministry.

In reference to the re-verification process being carried out, JPs are reminded that the deadline to verify their status is on July 31, 2018.

Persons who do not do so by the deadline will no longer be able to exercise their authority as a Justice of the Peace.

The purpose of this re-verification exercise is not only for the voters re-registration, but to organize the JP system and update the database/records of the Attorney General’s Ministry which dates back to 1914.

The Ministry will update the contact information for all JPs and remove the names of deceased JPs and individuals who no longer wish to volunteer their service to the citizens of Belize.

Verification can be done in-person at the Attorney General’s Ministry office in Belmopan, or a copy of the JP certificate can be sent to [email protected].

On Fridays only, persons can take their certificates to the Ministry’s Belize City office from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. for verification.

Justices of the Peace are also informed that it is not a requirement to be a part of a JP association.

There will be no appointments of new JPs until the verification process is over.
