Posted: Friday, June 1, 2018. 6:45 pm CST.

BBN Staff: Coordinators for the National Emergency Management Organization (NEMO) from around the country and support staff at the NEMO Headquarters came together this morning in Belmopan for a State of Readiness Meeting to mark the start of the new Hurricane Season.

Minister of National Emergency Management, Edmond Castro, encouraged the staff to continue doing their best and gave his commitment to adequately equip them to get the job done.

Hurricane Season 2018 officially begins today June 1 and runs until November 30.

The National Meteorological Service of Belize today reported that based on forecasts from several agencies, tropical cyclone activity will be normal to slightly above normal in the Atlantic Basin (North Atlantic Ocean, Caribbean Sea and the Gulf of Mexico) this year.

The consensus among these agencies is for there to be about twelve to fourteen (12 to 14) named storms, of those six to seven (6 to 7) are likely to become hurricanes and two (2) are expected to become major hurricanes (Category 3 or stronger).

An average season in the Atlantic Basin consists of twelve (12) named storms, six (6) hurricanes and two (2) major hurricanes.
