This article was written by Richard Harrison, Belizean investor in production and services businesses in Belize. He holds a Masters in Business Administration degree from Lancaster University.

By Richard Harrison: Yesterday Volcan Fuego in Escuintla, Guatemala erupted sending lava flow and ashes for miles….the death toll and those affected continues to rise.

Today a small group of Belizeans formed a committee to respond to the desire of many Belizeans to assist those affected.

The committee currently includes Richard Harrison, Armando Chulin, Nataly Moh, Naby Pech and Jessica Hernandez.

Collection centers will be announced tomorrow June 5, along with address, contact persons and phone numbers.

Each center will have a collection clerk who will document donations in triplicate receipts…one for the donor, one for the committee and one to present Guatemalan customs at point of shipping.

Only goods will be accepted…no cash. The goods most needed are canned foods, milk powder, baby foods, purified water, medicines and medical supplies including bandages, toilet paper, hygeine materials (soaps, toothpaste, tooth brushes, etc), pampers, female pads, blankets, jackets, sweaters, rice, sugar, beans, coffee.

Where possible, the committee recommends donor write nice messages on the items with a permanent marker. We will also be putting Belize flag stickers on as much of the items as we can.

The collection centers will be accepting donations through Friday, June 8…so that shipment can be made to arrive at its destination in Esquintla in timely fashion by Monday or Tuesday of next week.

We have met with the Guatemalan consul in Benque Viejo and he has committed to arrange customs documentation and transportation from border to Esquintla with the help of Municipality of Melchor and the Governor of Peten.

In times of need, let our humanity shine through….let us be our brothers keeper.

Belize is small, poor and weak…but our heart is big. Let all who can, give as generously as possible. Thank you!!
