By BBN Staff: The Belize Progressive Party (BPP) has requested to contribute to the Government of Belize’s ICJ campaign.

Belize is set to have its national referendum in April of next year where Belizeans will decide whether or not to take the dispute arising from Guatemala’s claim to Belize’s continental, maritime and insular territories to the International Court of Justice (ICJ) for final settlement.

In April, the Government of Belize (GOB) launched a public awareness campaign under the theme – “ICJ, Be Informed.”

In a letter to GOB, the BPP says that it is formally requesting its rightful place as a contributor to the campaign.

The BPP says that it is to ensure that Belizeans are provided with all the information including the pros and cons of going to the ICJ.

Furthermore, the party says that failing to include them would be a disservice to Belizeans.

Some members of Government have publicly declared that they are leaning toward a ‘Yes’ vote to the ICJ.

The Opposition, People’s United Party (PUP) has not officially issued its position on the matter.
