Opposition leader shares concerns about Elections and Boundaries Department

Posted: Tuesday, June 5, 2018. 7:00 pm CST.

BBN Staff:  A national voter re-registration was last done 21 years ago in 1997, however, on July 1, another is scheduled to take place.

Today during a press conference in Belize City, Leader of the Opposition, John Briceno, expressed some concerns about the Elections and Boundaries Department.

He explained that the department had been operating without a commission for quite some time.

Briceno told the press that he wrote to the Prime Minister, asking when the commission would be in place but has not gotten any response.

“The Elections and Boundaries Department is being run by the political directorate,” he informed.

Another concern Briceno has is that the department has indicated that it will not go to every village to assist with re-registration as it had done in 1997.

This, according to him, will be a challenge for villagers who want to participate in the democratic process.

Additionally, he informed that the department will not make it possible for a revision of the new list until November.

“This creates an opportunity for mischief,” he said.

Our newsroom was unable to get a response from the Elections and Boundaries Department.
