Police Minister excludes Opposition from crime fighting strategy?

BBN Staff:  Since the start of the year there have been an estimated 79 murders in Belize.

Today at a press conference in Belize City, Leader of the Opposition, John Briceno, called out John Saldivar, Minister of National Security.

He explained that during the last sitting of the House of Representatives, Saldivar promised that he would consult all stakeholders in an attempt to draft a comprehensive strategy to fight crime.

Briceno said that Saldivar promised to consult with the Opposition.

However, to date the Opposition has not been invited to any such consultation.

According to Briceno, the Belize Police Department has introduced many new units to fight crime but they have had no “dent” on crime.

“We cannot brutalize our youths into submission,” he said.

The public has lost confidence in the government’s response to crime, added Briceno, who is of the view that Belize need’s a holistic approach to crime.
