PUP leader says Santander must respect laws

BBN Staff:  During a press conference today in Belize City, Opposition Leader, John Briceno, weighed in on the Santander saga.

He said that last week it was brought to his attention that Santander had been selling sugar locally.

According to Briceno, this was although Santander entered Belize as an Export Processing Zone (EPZ) and was allowed certain incentives that local farmers are not privy to.

And so for this, he said, they should respect the laws of Belize and the guidelines for EPZs.

Briceno informed that he and the People’s United Party (PUP) stand on the side of the 5,000 cane farmers, however, he also wants to see Santander successful.

He explained that he is prepared to work with Santander to pressure the government of Belize to ensure that Santander has access to CARICOM markets.
