By BBN Staff: About three weeks ago it made news when it was speculated that the newly elected Belize City Council had been behind in payments for the Belize Waste Control (BWC) which collects garbage throughout Belize City.
Today Mayor Bernard Wagner addressed the claims during a press conference at the City Hall.
He conceded that the council had been in arrears for several weeks and that it is no secret that the council is strapped for cash after the last administration exited office.
“It is something we inherited,” said Mayor Wagner.
He told the press that the council and the BWC enjoys an excellent relationship and that the council is committed to settling its outstanding debts.
Deputy Mayor, Oscar Arnold, who was also at the press conference told the press that the story broke when the Mayor was out of the country.
According to Arnold, he contacted the principals at BWC who said they were unaware of a go-slow in garbage collection on Belize City’s south side.
The principals, he said, informed him that they never gave any such instruction for the protest.
Those principals of BWC will be in the country at a later date and will meet with the council to further iron out matters.
