Coastal Zone Management Authority and Institute to commemorate 20th anniversary in Belize on Thursday

Posted: Tuesday, June 19, 2018. 6:23 pm CST.

By BBN Staff:  The Coastal Zone Management Authority and Institute (CZMAI) will commemorate its 20th anniversary of service to Belize under the theme: “Celebrating 20 years of promoting sustainable use and management of Belize’s coastal zone”.

The CZMAI announces its 20th year as the leading authority on the sustainable use and planned development of Belize’s coastal and marine resources.

CZMAI has achieved two decades of being charged with the responsibility of policy development and coordination, research, monitoring and reporting on human use activities that impact the coastal zone of Belize.

The organization will commemorate this important milestone with a series of public education and awareness events in the months ahead leading up to the 4th Annual Coastal Awareness Week set to take place from October 22nd -27th, 2018.

The official launch of the 20th-anniversary commemoration takes place on Thursday, June 21st 2018 at 2:00 p.m. at the CZMAI Training Room in Belize City.

Dr Silvana Birchenough, Principal Marine Ecologist of the Centre for Environment, Fisheries and Aquaculture Science (CEFAS) located the United Kingdom will deliver the keynote address on the topic “Marine litter, Our Joint Responsibility: Opportunities and Challenges to Safeguard Marine Environments”.

The CZMAI will be unveiling a CZMAI’s 20th Anniversary Special Edition wooden phone case, in support of the phasing out of the single-use of plastics.

This initiative was made possible through a collaboration with A & S Covers and partners, OCEANA Belize, and World Wildlife Fund.

A portion of the proceeds from this initiative will serve as an endowment towards a CZMAI Scholarship for the 2019-2020 academic year.

A key accomplishment for the CZMAI has been the approval of Belize’s first National Integrated Coastal Zone Management (ICZM) Plan.

On August 31, 2016, the Government of Belize officially authorized the use of the ICZM Plan to be used by government and non-government agencies as the overall guiding strategy to make defensible and ensuring decisions to better manage Belize’s marine resources.

This plan is a first of its kind for Central America and the wider Caribbean region.

It blends conservation goals with current and future needs for coastal development and marine uses that relate to Belize’s key economic sectors.

The science-based spatial zoning scheme and policy actions in the plan will ensure that economic returns from key coastal resources are maximized while minimizing environmental impacts, and where possible, enhance ecological health.

Therefore, the implementation of the plan will ensure the sustainability of our coastal resources for the benefit of current and future generations.

While CZMAI celebrates the past 20 years and its accomplishments, the organization is looking to the future with great anticipation as it strives to embrace more innovative and practical solutions to address the anticipated management challenges and changes in the coastal and marine regions of Belize.

CZMAI will be providing timely information and updates on the schedule of other activities to commemorate its 20th Anniversary.

CZMAI invites the general public to join in celebrating Belize’s future of a sustainable coast!
