US withdraws from UN Human Rights Council

By BBN Staff:  In an alarming move, the United States of America has withdrawn from the United Nations (UN) Human Rights Council.

This decision was announced today in Washington DC. by Nikki Haley, the US Ambassador to the UN.

Haley is quoted in international media outlets saying, “We take this step because our commitment does not allow us to remain a part of a hypocritical and self-serving organization that makes a mockery of human rights.”

After this announcement, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Zeid Ra’ad al-Hussein, condemned the withdrawal as a “disappointing, if not really surprising.”

He continued, “Given the state of human rights in today’s world, the US should be stepping up, not stepping back.”

It is reported that the US decided to withdraw from the council because the council voted last month to investigate the killings of Palestinian protesters in the Gaza Strip and accused Israel of excessive use of force.
