By BBN Staff: The Genetic Improvement in Sheep and Goat Project held its second seed teacher workshop from June 20th-22nd, at Central Farm, Cayo District.

Fifteen technical officers and livestock extension officers from the Ministry of Agriculture, Belize Livestock Producers Association (BLPA) and Belize Agricultural Health Authority (BAHA) participated in the workshop.

The Sheep Project, funded by Republic of China (Taiwan) and in cooperation with government of Belize, was implemented since December 2015.

Some of the main goals of the Sheep Project have been completed including the expansion of the infrastructure for the National Sheep and Goat Breeding Center housing facility and pasture and protein bank expansion at Livestock Section in Central Farm.

The introduction of quality breeding stocks from the United States of America is still ongoing.

Building the capacity of technicians and farmers to improve the productivity of sheep in Belize is of major importance.

This series of seed teacher workshops have been scheduled with the goal to strengthen the knowledge of extension officers and technicians so that the adequate information is transferred to sheep farmers at the national level for the overall improvement of sheep farm management.

The main topics designed for the training sessions focused on breeding systems and artificial insemination, selection of breeding stocks and feeds, and feeding management using the appropriate alternative resources including agricultural by-products.

The proper technique of silage preparation and feeding methods was introduced to the participants. Feeding management forms an integral part of satisfying the essential nutrient needs of sheep and goat.

The discussions on the nutrient requirements for sheep had special focus during the workshop sessions. Both breeding management and nutrition are very essential for the success of any sheep farm operation. The sheep project has focused on incorporating those topics and expanding on the subject matter.

The technicians from Republic of China (Taiwan) and the counterpart technicians from the Ministry of Agriculture were fully committed during the training sessions, sharing useful information and experiences to achieve the goal of the Sheep Project.
